Child sized bike for a child sized person.
Let's face it everyone, I am really fucking short. And that is becoming a really big problem here in Rotterdam, Netherlands when they're big on biking as a main source of transportation (saves a lot of money). When it isn't pouring rain and sunny, like today, I could be riding my bike instead of taking the tram which slowly sucks away money from me every time I tap it on the machine. The tram is definitely cheaper than New York subways in the sense that you pay as you go. The farther you go from your initial destination to your next will be more expensive than the person going from one stop to the next. Unfortunately, with the subway in New York City you pay one fare and you can switch to different lines and carts without cost as long as they connect.
Yesterday morning, I woke up really early and met up with Alex to go to the local market behind Station Blaak. It's a huge thing. There's everything and anything selling there and the food there is much cheaper than the supermarket. We were looking up and down the rows and asked a handful of people where the bikes were being sold and if they had any left. No one seemed to know for certain and it was really unhelpful. And sad since I've been looking and haven't found a cheap small bike. We finally gave up and started shopping for real. I came home with a crazy heavy bike lock (hah but no bike), a pack of grapes, small strawberries, and AN ENTIRE CRATE BOX OF MANGOS. I think there are about nine mangos in the box and they're a little larger than the ones I would get in Boston. Alex and I both bought our own crate. Maybe that was a little excessive but I am sure I will be more than satisfied once I sink my teeth in them. I love mangos, can you tell?
We had to go home to drop off all the food, ended up going out to try to find a bike elsewhere but no luck. I was beginning to lose hope. Alex sent me a link to a group on Facebook where people posted items they wanted to sell. I started sending messages but it was obvious that they were probably already sold so I created a message for people who wanted to sell small bikes to me and for them to message me. It worked. Someone of the height 154 cm was selling a small bike. I'm (roughly) 150cm (if you round up, haaaah). I am meeting her later on today after I have the meeting with my teacher. Thankfully, she goes to school close by so she's going to meet me to check it out.
But speaking of teachers, I went to my first official class last night at five. All the teachers here that talk about our "classes" keep throwing up hand quotes around classes. They're implying that this is a very very loose school and it's all about self motivation. The class I attended with everyone was a lot more structured and I'm glad because I think I need a balance of that. It's Dutch Design, Culture, and Art. It's going to be an interesting class and the teacher is really cool too.
Afterwards, we went to a "coffee shop" to hang out but they wouldn't let Nateish in because she wasn't twenty-one yet so we just bought our things and went back to her room. I guess the same thing happened to Evan when our second group was supposed to meet up with us there.
Later, we needed to fill our stomaches so we visited the Night Shop for miscellaneous things and then went to The Kitchen for real food. I ordered bitterballens, obviously! I'm addicted. It's official. I also just wanted a savory snack so it was the best choice. We unanimously agreed that it wasn't the best place for food but the setting was really mellow and chill. It was nice. I am a fan of hanging lights.
